Something impossible sits on a muddy bank at 6:15 a.m. on May 9, 2005: a dry wooden music box playing a waltz with no footprints leading to it. A retired mail carrier who knew the pond well watched the brass cylinder turn and stutter-so how did the box get there and why was the ground around it undisturbed?
In this episode, we tell the sequence of events that began with a vibrating basement, continued through a subsidence oval in an east lawn, and led to the discovery of a dry music box on the retention pond-what connects a hidden cavity under a yard to a mysterious object on a mudbank?
Person: Edward Sheridan
Date: May 9, 2005
Location: retention pond at Meadow Trace, Teller County, Indiana
Person: Dean Romano
Event: subsidence oval found on east lawn
- At 6:15 a.m. on May 9, 2005, Edward Sheridan watched a dry wooden music box playing a waltz on the south bank of the retention pond.
- Meadow Trace is a subdivision of 41 houses built starting in 1993 on a reclaimed limestone quarry; the quarry pond had been dry for 11 years before construction.
- Dean Romano logged 37 vibration episodes over 41 nights beginning in May 2004, recording time of onset, duration, and intensity on a legal pad.
- A clean oval roughly 18 feet across of dead grass appeared on the east lawn in April 2005; a tent stake sank 14 inches in the center and 4 inches four feet away.
- On May 3, 2005, structural engineer Tom Greer probed the soft zone and found a cavity of indeterminate depth, recommending ground-penetrating radar.
