In which a secretive ferryman named Conkey Jem, whose hut serves as a haven and meeting-place for smugglers and fugitives, is introduced in his forbidding lair by the river Don, and we observe the wary alliance forming between him and the eager Rookwood party as they prepare for a hazardous enterprise.
