In the autumn of 2003, Luna's friend Annie inherited her grandmother's farmhouse on Foster Road, a gravel stretch outside the town of Ellery, Missouri. The house came with a rusted mailbox bolted to a cedar post at the end of the driveway. Annie started finding letters inside—hand-addressed to her grandmother, postmarked from towns that no longer existed. The letters were dated from the 1950s, but the ink was still wet. Luna drove out to help her sort through the house, and together they watched the mailbox fill with things that could not have been mailed.
