Have you ever heard of the Dweller on the Threshold?

Across nearly two centuries of esoteric philosophy, psychology, and spiritual traditions, the Dweller has been described as a mysterious figure encountered at moments of profound personal transformation. Some interpret it as a literal entity. Others see it as an archetype (be it a manifestation of fear, the shadow self, or any obstacles that stand between who we are and who we're capable of becoming).

In 2024, I made an award-winning documentary called Dweller after an unsettling experience during a paranormal investigation led me down a years-long search to understand this phenomenon. The film screened at film festivals across the country, where it earned several nominations and awards, including Best TV & New Media Feature.

Dweller: Director's Cut is the definitive version of that story.

Expanded into a four-part documentary podcast, this series goes far beyond the original film, restoring interviews, historical context, behind-the-scenes stories, and deeply personal reflections that never made it into the documentary's original runtime. Together, we'll revisit my experience with the Dweller, dig into the many ways it's been interpreted throughout history, and explore why people have been describing remarkably similar encounters for centuries.

The original film set out to answer one question: What happened?

This Director's Cut asks the more important one: Why?

In this installment of the Director's Cut, I step beyond the film to share my own evolving interpretation of the Dweller on the Threshold. Along the way, we'll revisit a deleted scene from the original documentary, featuring a fascinating excerpt from Daniel Hafner's lecture, The Guardian of the Threshold.

We'll also return to Stimson Hospital through our follow-up short film, The Possession Tape, explore why the Dweller continues to surface in conversations about phenomena like the Hat Man and doppelgängers, and examine how one unsettling experience became a lasting framework through which we view the paranormal itself.

The journey concludes with an astonishing tarot reading we received in New Orleans, an unexpected and fitting final chapter to this part of the story.

But while these threads ultimately bring the journey full circle, they don't provide a definitive ending. Because the more we explored the Dweller, the more we realized it was never just about what we encountered in a doorway at Stimson Hospital. It was about the questions that experience continued to raise. And while this brings the first chapter of the Director's Cut to a close, the door remains open. There are still more stories to tell, more conversations to have, and more strange connections to explore.

    The journey will continue soon…

  • Part 3 - Touched By Its Presence
    Jul 13 2026

If Part Two explored the history of the Dweller on the Threshold, this chapter explores what it may actually mean.

Author Gary Lachman, former bassist for Blondie and one of today's foremost writers on the Western esoteric tradition, joined me for one of the most illuminating interviews featured in the original film. His work on Rudolf Steiner, particularly Rudolf Steiner: An Introduction to His Life and Work, provided a crucial lens through which to understand the Dweller: not simply as an entity, but as an encounter with the parts of ourselves that stand between who we are and who we're capable of becoming. An idea that shares striking similarities with what Carl Jung would later describe as the “shadow self.”

Revisiting this interview two years later while assembling the Director's Cut was an unexpected experience in itself. Restoring this deeper conversation about Steiner's interpretation of the Dweller also came with some very strange synchronicities… ones that gave me more than a few chills and may lead to future rabbit holes of their own.

Sometimes looking back reveals things you couldn't possibly have seen the first time.

  • Part 2 - You That Dwell Therein
    Jul 13 2026

The original Dweller documentary introduced viewers to the mysterious concept known as the Dweller on the Threshold. In this Director's Cut, we go much deeper.

After my experience at Stimson Hospital, I stumbled across an extraordinary article by researcher and writer Ronnie Pontiac that helped me understand the long history of the Dweller on the Threshold, and how its various interpretations have morphed and evolved over time. That discovery led to one of the most fascinating interviews I've ever conducted.

This episode presents an extended cut of my conversation with Ronnie as we trace the Dweller from its literary origins in Zanoni through the writings of Helena Blavatsky, Annie Besant, and even Manly P. Hall, who personally mentored Ronnie. Along the way, we explore how the concept has evolved over nearly two centuries, from a supernatural guardian (literal entity) to a profoundly personal metaphor for transformation (archetype).

The deeper I researched the Dweller, the less interested I became in asking what it was... and the more compelled I became to ask why this archetype is happening.
