Bang My Box: The Robyn Byrd Story is an HBO documentary that chronicles the life of Robyn Byrd, an unapologetic New York City public access television host. From 1977 to 1998, Byrd’s sex-positive, late-night show featured adult entertainers and artists, and evolved into a beacon for queer visibility, free speech, and HIV/AIDS awareness. The documentary features archival footage and interviews from Byrd's cult-classic local broadcasts. Approaching her 70th birthday, the film follows Byrd in her day-to-day life, navigating the decision to archive her over 600 broadcast tapes while tenderly caring for Shelly Byrd, her husband of 50 years. We also discuss the film in the context of the backlash to the sexual revolution of the 1970's brought on by the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980's.
