Module 5 shifts the focus from what’s going wrong to what’s going right. When a young person is struggling with their mental health, it’s easy for everyone — parents included — to get caught up in the challenges, the crises, and the day-to-day difficulties. This module helps you see the bigger picture.

We look at why focusing on strengths is so important for your child’s emotional well-being, and how small, easily missed positives can make a real difference to their confidence and resilience. You’ll learn how to spot strengths even when your child can’t see them themselves, how to encourage growth without accidentally creating pressure, and how to celebrate progress in a way that feels genuine and supportive.

We also explore how strength-based thinking can transform your relationship — reducing conflict, rebuilding trust, and bringing back a sense of connection and lightness that may have been missing for a while.

By the end of this module, you’ll be better equipped to notice your child’s abilities, nurture their confidence, and help them feel more capable — not just despite their struggles, but alongside them.

This self help audio guide has been produced for East London NHS Foundation Trust and was written and narrated by Mark Taylor - Lead Mental Health Nurse, North Bedfordshire CAMHS Service.
