On March 16, 1982, Carrie Ann Jopek was sent home from Kosciuszko Middle School in Milwaukee after being suspended for roaming the halls without a pass [citation:1]. Her mother Carolyn chose to let her walk the short distance alone. Carrie never made it. For seventeen months, there was no sign of her. Then, in August 1983, a contractor working on a back porch struck something hard. Human bone [citation:5]. Carrie had been buried underneath the porch of a house where a party had taken place the day she vanished [citation:8]. She spent two of her birthdays in that shallow grave.

Jose Ferreira, a 17-year-old neighbor at the time, was questioned but never charged. The case went cold for 33 years. Then, on October 11, 2015, Ferreira called a Milwaukee TV station and confessed. He told a reporter he pushed Carrie down a basement stairs after she refused to make out with him. He then sexually assaulted her body and buried her under the porch [citation:3]. He told police her ghost had been haunting him for three decades [citation:4]. Ferreira pleaded guilty to lesser charges in 2017 and received just seven years in prison [citation:8]. Carrie's mother finally got answers. But justice came at a heartbreaking cost.
