Daily Ski Conditions for Aspen Snowmass, Colorado
Here's your insider's look at what's happening on the slopes at Aspen Snowmass right now.
The base is sitting at a modest 19 inches with 32 of the 41 lifts spinning, so you've got plenty of vertical to work with even if not everything is firing up yet. The upper mountain is looking a bit better than the base, which is pretty typical for mid-January in Colorado. Both mountains are in that transitional phase where conditions can change rapidly depending on sun exposure and traffic, so timing your runs strategically will pay dividends.
Weather-wise, it's freeze-thaw city at the moment, with overnight lows dipping to around 31 degrees and daytime highs climbing to the upper 40s. That means you'll want to prioritize early morning runs when things are still firm, especially on the lower elevations where warmer temperatures are doing a number on the snow quality. Higher up the mountain, conditions should stay a bit more stable throughout the day.
The good news on the forecast front is that snow is finally showing up in the extended outlook. Fresh powder is expected around January 23rd with about an inch in the forecast, and another system could bring around 2 inches by the end of the week. For the next couple of days though, expect dry conditions, so if you're planning to ski, enjoy the stability even if it's not pristine.
Grooming crews are working overtime on the man-made snow terrain, laying down fresh corduroy each night, while natural snow runs are getting limited grooming due to the thinner base. Off-piste skiing is available but remember that out-of-bounds terrain isn't always patrolled or avalanche-controlled, so make sure you're checking local conditions and skiing smart if you venture out there.
The mountain is running strong through April 12th, so you've got plenty of time to chase those incoming storms and build up those vertical feet. Grab your base layers, hit the mountain early, and enjoy watching these fresh snow events roll through Colorado.
