With the Dark Angels spread across a hundred systems, primarch Lion El'Jonson stands as Lord Protector of Ultramar - though his true motives are known to few indeed, and old rivalries on the home world threaten to tear the Legion in half.

But when word comes of the Night Lords' attack on Sotha, the Lion's brutal actions bring Imperium Secundus once again to the brink of civil war. Not even the most fearsome warriors of the Dreadwing, nor any arcane secret of the Order, can guarantee victory if he sets himself against his loyal brothers.

I'm surprised I liked it. a bit too much of Caliban, to my liking. Also Robute seamed not consistent with how

too much Caliban

Like most Dark Angels books, it’s tedious to get through. I will try to return it. Even though I want to know how the imperium secundus arc ends.

Sadly an absolute bore

Unfortunately this audiobook pairs subpar storytelling and writing with bad voice acting.

The Characters of the main plot in this story act stupidly or are portrayed in a way that is inconsistent with previous parts of the Horus Heresy. The writing is unpolished and often feels like reading a first draft with unrefined expressions and dialogue.

Unfortunately the voice actor does nothing to improve this novella. Characters have inconsistent voices across different scenes and because of that it’s often hard to tell who is actually speaking. Also long established pronunciations of certain terms are disregarded. Considering the prices that Black Library normally charges for their audiobooks, you would expect the voice actor to familiarise himself with how certain names and terms were pronounced but no.

The only parts I enjoyed played on Caliban, which unfortunately only makes up a quarter or third of the book. Not recommended.

The story seems hastily assembled and with very inconsistent pacing. The scenes in Caliban are quite good, but overall too short, more like the pilot to another book. And the whole story with the Lion and Curze is just convoluted and mostly unoriginal. The major twists are predictable and underwhelming.
Voice acting was pretty good and I really liked Sanguinius.

Too much back and forth
