Forever Peace is not a sequel to his previous award-winning work, The Forever War, but it deals with similarly provocative issues. When it was published, Forever Peace was chosen as the Best Book of the Year by Publishers Weekly. It also won the coveted Hugo Award.

War in the 21st century is fought by "soldierboys". Remote-controlled mechanical monsters, they are run by human soldiers who hard-wire their brains together to form each unit. Julian is one of these dedicated soldiers, until he inadvertently kills a young boy. Now he struggles to understand how this has changed his mind.

Forever Peace is a riveting portrayal of the effects of collective consciousness, and it offers some tantalizing revelations. Narrator George Wilson's skillful performance weaves together the elements of futuristic technology with the drama of a trained soldier reconciling basic human needs.

Too much of the narrator talking to himself and not much happening. I struggled to get into what little action there was, and got bored. With half of the book over I was still waiting for the story to get going. It hardly ever did.

How can the first book in the series be so well written and then the second one be such a drag? Dissappointing.

Please note that there's no Spoiler Alert since hardly anything happens anyhow although it takes a whole book to tell you that. Like Douglas Adams once mentioned.

So: As we have leaned in the fantastic first novel Mr Mandela settled down on a planet with his sweetheart and other veterans of the forever war after both cloned mankind and cloned Taurans.

now we learn that it's all bad. It's peace allright, but the planet sucks- it's as cold and as boring as Alaska. and cloned men/Taurans and old human, the Vets don't get along. it's like: what have the Clones ever done to us?

plan: the Vets cupture a ship to hibernate for 40.000 years. First they plot to cupture it, then the Clones allow it to take it, but than it has to be hijacked anyhow. Right after the start something goes wrong and the Vets have to return to the planet.
But anyone else has disappeared! no Clones, no Vets, just the few on the ship.

so they go to earth to find out that the population of the whole galaxy has vanished. no, not all: the shape changers didn't. then something like GOD appears to tell that this vanishing act was his doing and hey he/she/they lets everyone re-appear. End
