Über diesen Titel
As parents, we want our children to take responsibility for their schoolwork, their chores, and their choices. We want them to grow into independent adults, but when we see them struggling, we sometimes have a tendency to step in and problem-solve, telling them exactly what to do or even doing things for them ourselves. The problem is the more controlling we are with our children, the more out of control they feel. When our children feel out of control, problems big and small follow—from more tantrums in thwarted toddlers to a higher risk of drug and alcohol use in adolescence. So how do we support our children’s autonomy while maintaining boundaries and not losing our minds in the process?
From clinical psychologist Emily Edlynn, PhD, comes a flexible parenting framework that can apply to every family and every parental relationship. With Autonomy-Supportive Parenting, you can build trust in your child and trust in yourself.

Insightful read, even for a non-parent
I read this book out of curiosity, not having any kids. How does one go ahead and raise children without screwing it all up? This was a book that seemed to offer some evidence-based advice from a mom and a psychologist (same person, of course). And to a non-parent like me, the book reads like a Mystery novel!
Here's a problem you'll face as a parent: How are you going to approach it?
Through rewards? Oh boy, that's going to backfire.
Through contingent love? Oh no, because here's what's going to happen
Through punishment, maybe? Ha, buckle up, because here's what will happen next.
And then, she presents the solution, the reader's jaw drops appropriately, and notes are taken.
Then comes the next problem your child is going to present you with - all the way from toddler to teenager - and the mystery of how you're going to solve that one starts all over!
Granted, the solution follows a certain pattern. But yeah, there's a reason it's called autonomy supportive parenting! And still, each and every time I found myself turning another page to figure out how challenge xyz is going to get solved. Dr. Edlynn peppers the book with stories out of her own life, some of which are laugh-out-loud funny, and all of which are relatable (at least compared to my childhood). Must read for parents, very entertaining for those who are kid-curious.
Last but not least, I know what birthday gift every young parent in MY life is going to get for the foreseeable future!
