Über diesen Titel

Lust. Ambition. Murder.

When a beautiful, wealthy student is found dead in her room in Oxford's most prestigious college, Detective Inspector Bridget Hart is called to investigate. The murdered girl appeared to have no enemies, yet was killed in a brutal and bloody assault.

Haunted and driven by her own personal tragedy, newly promoted DI Bridget Hart has a lot to prove as she leads her first murder case. Her investigation uncovers a tangled web of lies, lust and ambition, and brings her into conflict with powerful interests.

But no one can be above suspicion within the closed and claustrophobic confines of an Oxford college, where students and academics live and work side by side, and a ruthless killer waits to strike again.

I am delightfully surprised by that book, as I discovered it as part of my subscription.
Although that adapter reader might have guessed that killer quite ahead of the leading investigator, the story is written divertingly, the characters offer a promise of interesting development in the next book to come.
Esther Wayne does a remarkably good job bringing the protagonist to life with her incredible voice.

Really enjoyable

I had hoped for more creativity and better writing. The story is put together like an episode of a low budget crime series. The speaker is rather poor, with highly irregular speed of narration and sometimes sloppy articulation . I escaped from Audble listening to Kindle reading when I could not bear the speaker anymore.

Constructed from a set of cliches

I found the series because it is included in my subscription and enjoyed it very much.

Very good

Gute Sprecherin, Geschichte mäßig glaubwürdig, oft fragwürdig, warum manche Stränge einfach fallen gelassen werden, aber okay zum Anhören

Viele Wendungen

It is not easy to foresee the killer until the obvious hint. There are many characters and therefore many possibilities. It seems good police work to me. The only thing I always find strange is when the killer is very smart, planned everything and anticipated so much, why he is making a full confession at the end and why he’s making a stupid affected mistake like throwing somebody in the public from a tower?! It’s not realistic, is it? I think it’s just for the reader for having no loose ends.
The reader is a good one, sometimes she has some high pitches.
All together it was worth listening!

Interesting except for the end

Liked the characters, the plot and the surprising twists. Even the subtle romance was nice, Nicely told

Lots of twists

Even though it was easy to foresee who did the killing. The atmosphere of Oxford was very enjoyable.

I enjoyed the book,

To be fair, I wouldn't have bought this, but as a title included in the subscription I was positively surprised. Aside from the cringe-inducing, unrealistic portrayal of the victim, it was a nice enough story. I listen for research purposes and the little details here and there really do what they're supposed to do. Very evocative, no unnecessary page-long descriptions of essentially boring stuff. The reader's voice is lovely, and her style is easy to listen to for a few hours.

Edit: the conclusion is nonsensical

You can listen to it and eventually you want to know who the murderer is. But there are a bit too many suspects. The characters are simply portrayed, but perhaps they will develop. I'm very spoilt by the narrator of the JD Kirk audiobooks.

Nice audiobook

I am surprised with how much I liked it. I judged the book by its cheezy title and my expectations were really low. But I flew through it in a day, it was very easy to read. The story kept on twisting and uncovering unexpected angles and new characters, keeping me wondering who the killer was. What I liked was, that as reader, we uncover the facts together with the detective; it feels like you are in the middle of the investigation, learning how to approach solving a crime. We also learn a few interesting forensic analysis details. Finally, I appreciated that the portrayal of Oxford and the college life was not romanticised, but rather dispassionate. Even though the most famous college was chosen as the main place of action, I liked that the geography of the book was wide, and covered less obvious places like Cowley and even the little villages around Oxford. It really creates an impression that the author didn't write it after spending one day in Oxford as a tourist.

The narration was smooth too, easy to understand and with an even volume throughout.

surprisingly good
