I love the way Frank McCourt tells the story of his childhood. I over his Irish accent and the innocence and openness with which he tells his story often bringing tears to my eyes but also making me chuckle at some of the funnier parts. Beautiful, heartbreaking, sad and wonderful all at the same time.

In meinen Augen ein wirklich großes Buch. Die haarsträubenden Verhältnisse der Armen im Irland der 30er Jahre werden anhand der Geschichte des kleinen Frank erzählt. Da Frank nie etwas anderes kennenlernen konnte als nur die ärmlichsten Verhältnisse erzählt er von ihnen als wäre es das natürlichste der Welt. So kommt das Buch ganz ohne Sozialromantik, Kitsch und Tränendrüse aus, was es nur umso intesiver macht.Es ist mehr als nur eine historischer Rückblick in glücklicherweise überwundene Zeiten. Ich empfinde es eher als Parabel zur Kindheit in Armut schlechthin, die auch in der Gegenwart ihre Bedeutung behält.Kurz zur Sprache: Es ist ein großes Vergnügen dem Autor und Helden des Buches, Frank McCourt beim lesen zuzuhören. Der irische Arbeiterklassenakzent ist aber nicht ganz ohne. Würde das Orginal nur Leuten empgfehlen die es gewohnt sind Filme oder Hörbücher in Englisch zu hören.
