My German review: Angepriesen als offizielle Fortsetzung von "Spuk in Hill House" von Shirley Jackson, habe ich mir das Hörbuch geholt und war gespannt, wie sich die Geschichte weiterentwickelt.

Nachdem ich das Buch nun zu Ende gehört habe, bleibt jedoch ein enttäuschtes Kopfschütteln zurück.

Die Ereignisse des Originals werden praktisch nicht erwähnt, dafür aber (und auch das nur spärlich) Geschehnisse, die in den 60 Jahren seitdem passiert sind. Tatsächlich frage ich mich, warum dies überhaupt eine Fortsetzung zu Jacksons Klassiker sein soll - es könnte auch in jedem anderen heimgesuchten Haus stattfinden.

Am Ende hat man das Gefühl, es würden mehrere Kapitel fehlen (tun sie nicht) und auf einmal kommt es zum großen Finale, ohne dass wirklich darauf hin gearbeitet wird und die Geschichte endet.

Vielleicht ein Stilmittel, um den Hörer ebenso verwirrt zurückzulassen wie die Charaktere, dennoch enttäuschend.

Die Sprecherin ist hervorragend und hier und da werden auch Hintergrundgeräusche und Musik eingepielt, allerdings dies auch eher sporadisch.

My English review: Touted as the official sequel to "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson, I bought the audio book and was excited to see how the story developed further.

Now that I've finished listening to the book, I'm left shaking my head in disappointment.

The events of the original are practically not mentioned, but instead (and only sparingly) are events that have happened in the 60 years since. In fact, I wonder why this would even be a sequel to Jackson's classic - it could easily take place in any other haunted house.

At the end you have the feeling that several chapters are missing (they aren't) and suddenly the big finale comes without any real work being done towards it and the story ends.

Perhaps a stylistic device to leave the listener as confused as the characters, but still disappointing.

The speaker is excellent and background noises and music are also played here and there, although this is rather sporadic.
