The narrator is one Mrs. Hawkins. She writes from Italy, a far cry from Kensington indeed, taking us back to her threadbare years in postwar London. As a young, rather fat war-widow she spent her days working for a crazy, almost bankrupt publisher; and her nights offering advice from her boarding-house in South Kensington. In both locations, our heroine soon uncovered difficulties: shady literary dealings; anonymous letters, blackmail, and even suicide. Whilst Mrs. Hawkins innocently, confidently put about setting things right, she could little imagine the ensuing mayhem and consequences. Now many decades older, thinner, and pleased with her situation in Italy, Mrs. Hawkins reflects on all those dark happenings, recounting how her own life changed forever.

Juliet Stevenson did a stellar job of conveying the story with all its subtleties! I enjoyed it immensely.

This was my first Muriel Spark novel. From previous recommendations, I may have expected something different.

While listening to this audiobook, I was always waiting for something exciting to happen as the background in the publishing business sounded rather interesting and appealing to me, It was a quick "read", however, in hindsight I did not find the storyline or the protagonists extremely gripping.

I picked this book also based on the reader, however, was also a bit disappointed as I found Juliet Stevenson's interpretration of other audio books more convincing.

In general, for me this audio book was not such a satisfying experience. But maybe Muriel Spark's writing style ist just not for me.
