Adam Deveril, the new Viscount Lynton and a hero at Salamanca, returns from the Peninsula War to find his family on the brink of ruin and the broad acres of his ancestral home mortgaged to the hilt. It is Lord Oversley, father of Adam's first love, who tactfully introduces him to Mr Jonathan Chaleigh, a city man of apparently unlimited wealth with no social ambitions for himself, but with his eyes firmly fixed on a suitable match for his one and only daughter.

For more than 50 years Georgette Heyer brought romance and adventure to a wordwide audience, and Civil Contract shows how she continues to be loved today.

I was so very glad to find A Civil Contract among the newly released Heyer audiobooks. It's been one of my favourites for many years.

But I could have wished for a narrator to be i little more involved with the story and the different characters. There was SOME distinction between the characters but it was a little TOO subtle for my taste - and not always consistent. Some more variations of pitch, diction, accent (esp. for Mr Chawleigh) and emotions (Julia in hysterics - or nearly - was too flat, so was Lady Lynton in her desperation).
All in all, it was ok but I have heard better audios.
Edit to add: There were some mispronunciations, too (mien, lief/liefer, raiment) that drove me mad. They are not, I think, in general use nowadays but why didn't the speaker look them up beforehand?

Love the story but...
