 Set in the tumultuous year of 1968 in southern Virginia, a racially charged murder case sets a duo of white and Black lawyers against a deeply unfair system as they work to defend their wrongfully accused Black defendants in this courtroom drama from #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci. 

Jack Lee is a white lawyer from Freeman County, Virginia, who has never done anything to push back against racism—until he decides to represent Jerome Washington, a Black man charged with brutally killing an elderly wealthy white couple. Die Darstellung von Diskriminierung und Gewalt wegen der Hautfarbe, am Beispiel der Verteidigung in einer Mordanklage in den Südstaaten der USA Ende der 1960-iger, macht diese unglaublichen Zustände aktiv erlebbar. Die Handlung ist detailreich beschrieben und spannend bis zum unerwarteten show-down.
Gleichzeitig bin über eine Phrase in der Verteidigung bzw. den damit verbundenen Kampf der schwarzen Anwältin gestolpert als sie die Frage aufwarf, wie eine Regierung auf die Idee kommen kann, Teilen der Gesellschaft vorzuschreiben wo sie im Bus zu sitzen und wie sie zu leben hat. Im Kontext war natürlich die Diskriminierung der schwarzen Bevölkerung gemein.
Ich frage mich mit der gleichen Selbstverständlichkeit wie eine Regierung heutzutage großen Teilen der Gesellschaft vorschreiben will, wie diese zu sprechen, zu heizen oder mobil zu sein hat. Dies ist ebenso ein Irrweg und zu verurteilen, wie die beschriebenen Zustände der Diskriminierung aus den 60-zigern!
