Über diesen Titel

Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable.

And yet when she stumbles upon the bludgeoned corpse of poor Mr. Otley in the deserted library of the Skeffingtons' country house, that's exactly what she does.

This Murder Mystery, taking place at a housparty in about 1800, was not just "a mystery to be solved", it was also very funny to read.
A really great story by Lynn Messina, which I had to buy together with the following books of this series, after reading the first part via KindleUnlimited.
Switching between reading my self and using audible, I can also praise the reader Jill Smith.

I need a 6th star!

I actually liked the story itself: a murder investigation led by a young woman who, frankly, seems wildly unqualified for the job. She gets help from an unexpected source—a man she doesn’t like at first, but inevitably starts falling for. Yes, the good old trope.

But the plot moves at a glacial pace. Lynn Messina needs ten sentences for every thought where I would’ve needed one. The result? A book that feels painfully slow. I also would’ve appreciated more interaction between the two protagonists; instead, our heroine keeps circling the same conversations with her aunt. Booooring.

By the end, I was hoping not only for a solved murder but also for the two main characters to finally get together. No such luck—Messina apparently decided to save that for a future installment. Also too slow for my taste.

I won’t be listening to the next ones.
