The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.
A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 - "Q" is for "question mark". A world that bears a question.
Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.
As Aomame's and Tengo's narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.
A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell's, 1Q84 is Haruki Murakami's most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.
BONUS AUDIO: Audible interviews the translators of 1Q84, Jay Rubin and Philip Gabriel.

Across two parallel narratives, Murakami draws listeners into a mind-bending universe in which Lauren Bacall, Bob Dylan, a split-brained data processor, a deranged scientist, his shockingly undemure granddaughter, and various thugs, librarians, and subterranean monsters collide to dazzling effect. What emerges is a novel that is at once hilariously funny and a deeply serious meditation on the nature and uses of the mind.

Combine an offbeat cast of characters with Murakami's idiosyncratic prose, and the result is the remarkable story Dance Dance Dance: high-class call girls billed to MasterCard, a psychic 13-year-old dropout has a passion for talking heads, and meet a hunky matinee idol doomed to play dentists and teachers. Don’t forget the one-armed beach-combing poet, an uptight hotel clerk and one very bemused narrator caught in the web of advanced capitalist mayhem.

Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are vanishing cats and smoky bars, lonely hearts and mysterious women, baseball and the Beatles, woven together to tell stories that speak to us all. Marked by the same wry humor that has defined his entire body of work, in this collection Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic.

Geschichte
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Haruki Murakami at its best
End is approaching (about 9 hours left) and I am still fascinated by the story. The book is exciting and tantalizing from the beginning. It is difficult to stop listening but generally easy to listen (e.g. in the car) and to follow the story even after some days of not finding time for it. For non natives, the English is relative easy to follow, similar as Ken Follett.
As usual for Murakami, it is a combined love, mystery, crime (some), and fantasy story with a philosophical touch, a lot of strange thinking, the typical Murakami blend of fantasy and realism....very entertaining; simply a brilliant, ingenious book. The main characters are well described with interesting and positive personality; so it’s easy to get “into” the story and being a part of it.
It is a typical Murakami book, but perhaps more interlaced, complex as previous books (1000 pages!), with several levels but it never gets boring when I am listening (...in the car or during simple house work).
You have to listen to it if you are a Murakami fan. I also can recommend it for people which never have listen/read Murakami but like long stories such as the ones from Ken Follett, Jeffry Archer, Stephen King, James Clavell etc..

Exceptional
This was exceptional. I wrote in an early reading update that I feel like this trilogy is more like a slowly unraveling piece of art and I still stand by it.
This series is probably not something for people who enjoy fast and action packed stories but for people who enjoy a slowly developing plot and an intricately detailed world building with interesting and complex characters. This story and its characters felt incredibly real to me and I feel a bit lost now that I've finished this almost 1000 pages long book after listening to it every night for two months.
If you're interested I HIGHLY recommend you to listen to the audiobook from audible narrated by Allison Hiroto, Marc Vietor and Mark Boyett. It's perfect.

A little disappointing
The narrators are great, especially Tengo and Ushikawa. I liked the story in the beginning but it slowed down extremely in the middle and the conclusion was incredibly predictable. Which is generally okay but not to an extent where I get bored for more than 10h while barely anything happens (3 months in the book). Also the characters are very inconsistent which of course also is true for real humans, but not like this. E.g. it is mentioned that Aomame looks at her reflection in the mirror for several minutes every day. 20 chapters later that changes to "she had always avoided looking in the mirror".
