great book, written like an epic tale. Vast and fascinating world building and enough plot twists to stay hooked hours on end.
I started with book 1 three days ago, now I'm at book 5 :).
also great that the books are free!!

Great Story telling

The narrator makes eating an apple sound like some legendary feat in the most annoying and mocking kind of way imaginable. also the tone and pace of narration barely change, making it hard for any kind of excitement to develop. The story itself is allright, the narrator being the main problem for me here. hes just dragging the words unaturally, trying a bit too hard to go for a.. dubious kind of epic tale narration but overshooting into a mockery of it.

It's a western take on a chinese cultivation story with an underlying story line that I found compelling and well crafted. The MC character is a mixed bag but I' was ok with a somewhat antihero who is nevertheless authentic. I dropped the series after volume 15 (volume 1-14 were included in the subscription when I listened to them). One arc was finished and MC had turned more and more into a bit too much of a lone wolf for my liking and the problematic patterns of the story telling became much more prevalent in that last book.

I took 2 stars off but not for the story itself: the more of the story's telling you follow the clearer the pattern becomes that female characters are unfortunately more like useful props that may suddenly turn into helpless damsels in distress as needed, no matter how powerful they were introduced as, and that is among other common and less common bad tropes. Weirdly the only gay/non straight characters we ever get are all people with bad characters or they're dead (there is one bi one after they pass we randomly learn that before their last partner who was opposite sex they only ever dated same sex people). The author may not have had a choice about the gay representation seeing where he is from, but just leaving out their preferences which had no baring on the story anyway, would have been much better then.

A very interesting story, but the narrator is not the best choice for an rather serious storyline like this, he ripped me from immersion every time he waters his mouth (he does it very often), maybe that's just bothering me.

The nagging done all in all it's a good book and I await what is to come.
