The male protagonist in this story is a horrible person, and none of the excuses made for him justify his awfulness. The trope and the female protagonist's motivations are ridiculous. The narrator did a good job, though. She made the characters seem much more intelligent than they would have come across in my head had I read the story instead of listening to it. Unfortunately, it was not enough to redeem the lack of respect everone seemed to have for everone else. I did not finish this audiobook, but I did listen for several hours. There were some thoughts and comments by the female protagonist, Emma, that seemed intelligent and insightful enough (despite her silly plans) to make me believe the miserable behavious of some of the other characters would be explained in a satisfying way later on in the story but eventually I gave up.
