À propos de ce titre

This science fiction novel describes the epic voyage of the spacecraft Leonora Christine, which will take a fifty-strong crew to a planet some thirty light years distant.

From practically the very first page, Tau Zero sets scientific realities in dramatic tension with the very real emotional and psychological states of the travelers, exploring the effect of time contraction due to traveling at near-light speed on the human psyche. This tension is a dynamic that Anderson explores with great success over the course of the novel as fifty crewmembers settle in for the long journey together. While they are a highly trained team of scientists and researchers and therefore professionals, they are also a community of individuals, each of them trying to create for him or herself a life in a whole new space—or, literally, in space.

It isn’t long, however, before the voyage takes a turn for the worse. The ship passes through a small, uncharted nebula that makes it impossible to decelerate the ship. Their only hope is to do the opposite and speed up. But acceleration towards and within the speed of light means that time outside the spaceship passes even more rapidly, sending the crew deeper into space and further into an unknown future.

Avis de la critique

“Tau Zero has been hailed as the quintessential hard SF novel, and it’s a well-deserved accolade…an exceptional story, grounded in proper science, and brimming with mind-boggling ideas, hard science, and a scale rarely matched.”

(Worlds without End)

“The ultimate hard science fiction novel.”

I tried 2x speed, the pauses are still just as annoyingly long while the talking is, then, too fast. How the hell did this get accepted?

A good story, fascinating due to the time frames involved and the grantness.

But the reader only know one mode of narrating; monotone, aggressive, with long-term pauses. Perfect for grant statements and posturing. But it takes all life out of the story. All the intimate parts die under this narration.

Bottom line up front: Tau Zero offers a fascinating scientific premise and solid character development, but the pacing drags in places and the narration style may be distracting for some listeners.

Pros:

Intriguing core concept with credible scientific grounding

Strong interpersonal dynamics aboard the ship

Intellectual depth without being completely inaccessible

Cons:

Certain passages feel unnecessarily stretched, slowing momentum

Narrator’s delivery has an exaggerated cadence that becomes irritating over long sessions

Emotional tone sometimes clashes with the story’s intended atmosphere

For context: I usually enjoy hard science fiction with strong narration, such as Project Hail Mary, the Bobiverse series, and Expeditionary Force. Compared to those, Tau Zero feels more classical and philosophical, but less engaging in terms of performance and pacing. If you appreciate vintage sci-fi ideas and don’t mind slower sections or a narrator you have to “tune out,” it may still be worth the listen.

Ambitious Hard-Sci-Fi with Great Ideas but Uneven Delivery

I have read the book many years ago and now I enjoyed listening to the story. It has been on my recommendation-list on a top position the whole time although many good books have been written in the mean time. From the sciencefiction point of view it is a every basic scenario. Poul Anderson was a great author.
