He’s waited a long time for me, but I’ve waited longer for the truth. Not even the king himself could keep me from the only ties left to my identity. Then I meet him, and I’m stuck between uncovering who I am and discovering who I’m meant to be.

After seven years I finally found her, my true mate’s timing couldn’t have been more perfect. With the rogue and vampire attacks increasing in vigor, my kingdom needed a strong leader now more than ever. They needed us. Only together, did we have a chance. But she’s fighting her destiny, fighting me. It’s only a matter of time before my enemies plaguing my kingdom would see this and try to take what’s mine.

I picked up the second book because the author had real potential with this world and I hoped the story would finally go beyond the smut. She does try to develop the world and give it more depth, but it often feels inconsistent. She tries to expand the world with more politics, creatures and factions, but it never feels consistent. It is supposed to be a contemporary setting with humans and other beings, but at times it feels like dystopia, at other times almost historical, and it is hard to tell which time period we are actually in. There are many loopholes and moments where the logic of the world simply does not hold together. Certain structures of power, groups and hierarchies feel confusing because there is no clear story or explanation behind them. It is never clear why some characters have influence and others do not, or why certain groups still matter when their authority seems to be easily replaceable. The world changes its own rules depending on the scene, which makes it hard to connect with it emotionally. The series still has some potential, but the author keeps using it in the wrong places, turning interesting premises into filler instead of building a coherent history behind the world. I finished the book mainly because I really like the narrators and I will probably continue with the third one, again mostly for them.

Great Narration, Messy World
