Such an important read!
This book is such an important read for not just people who have or currently are struggling with mental health issues, but also advocates/family & friends trying to understand their experiences.
Morgan Parker's story (based on this fictional/semi-biographical retelling of her life) gives a much needed insight into the experiences of young Black people. It is also rare to have the life of a Black woman/teenager portrayed which partakes in more alternative cultures, such as Emo etc. I'm sure that her sharing her enthusiasm for these movements validates a lot of young woman who can relate to her feelings of isolation and wanting to "fit in", whilst also partaking in their personal interests that go against society's expectations for them.
As someone who struggles with mental health issues, I really appreciated and related to the negative sides of depression and anxiety. It's not always a glamorizing experience, as can be sometimes taken away from movies or social media. And it's so important to validate and show those sides, too.
Thank you to the author for this wonderful read, I am sure to include it in my curriculum as a future teacher :)
Ps. The audio book is also very well read & produced and was very enjoyable to listen to, even though I (admittedly) sped it up a bit.
