Rather interesting

I found the book itself rather interesting but the reading was a bit monotone for me so it was hard to follow it without falling asleep at some point

Well-researched, most engaging book

Well-researched book that tells the story of commodity traders and their impact on world politics since WWII in a highly engaging style.

Interesting, but also a bit lengthy

There are a lot of lengthy stories of individual traders and their careers. A lot of the stories are overlapping and at times it gets a bit boring. There's not much new information in the book. Most of it you have already read in the papers. And for what was new you have to read a lot. But I still would read the book again.

In short: These companies paid bribes and circumvented US sanctions by setting up shop in countries where this was legal. Very few did really break the law in the countries they were based. Later the US used the US dollar to apply US law extraterritorially. Western banks then stopped doing business with traders that legally circumvented sanctions in other jurisdictions. Now companies in the Middle East and Asia do the circumventing.

Also, competition regulators did let these companies get very big, dominating the market and at times used their market power to profit in crisis. Although the author does not see the problem with regulators (at least he does not say so) but he moralizes.

Chronology, numbers and connections are missing.

Maybe in the written book you find a lot of data in charts and graphs. Here it's missing and the narrator isn't able to make all connections clear to the listener. Moreover the repercussions of the traders actions are not reflected in an educated way. Moreover technical insights on how to be able to conclude a deal are missing. That a few parties agreed on sth and so they did and made a lot of profit is just not enough to be interesting or revealing. Real insights are missing.
