Lost sleep listening

I cannot point to the exact qualities that made this come about, but I listened to the entire book in one go - even to the detriment of my sleep cycle. Now I started the second one right away... Considering there are currently 3 books available, I hope I won't suffer from serious sleep deprivation. I just want more...

naja, not as good as he wo fights with monsters

slow at the beginnen and it is a lacking a goal other than survival. The Charakters are not verry deep and i dont understand why he is not asking way more questions abaut the System. It has not many jokes or light parts and is a bit grimm. but all in all not a bad read. Maby you like it more than me

Begins slow but then gets really good

If this is not your first litrpg bookthen the beginning might feel a bit slow, but after that action starts quickly and the whole story and its characters grow on you. I will 100% get book 2.

Interesting concept but falls short in many ways

To be honest I barely remember the first few hours because they were just boring. After about 5 hours the story starts to at least get interesting but isn't really for me. I'm almost finished with the second book in the series as I write this review because I wanted to give the series a chance. The second book is much better but also not my type of story so I probably won't continue the series;
but if you like intrigue and conniving main characters that aren't inherently bad then give this series a shot.

The only real cons I have for the series is that I don't really understand/like the class system it's just weirdly complex with differences in skills, spells and abilities that, I'm pretty sure, were talked about in the first few hours of this book but either I didn't listen properly or it just wasn't explained that well because I still don't really get it.
And I guess the fighting scenes are .. well predictable in a way you will exactly know what will happen most of the time. Either our main protagonist isn't spotted and just slaughters everyone or he is spotted in the last moment, fights and for some reason or another he will get hit but barely manages to live and of course will still somehow win the fight.

Perfekt!

Ich bin total begeistert. Einer der besten LitRPG-Romane, die ich bisher gehört habe.

Gut finde ich, dass sich der Charakter langsamer entwickelt als in den meisten anderen Geschichten, in denen ich als Leser die erreichten Erfahrungspunkte und Fähigkeiten nur so um die Ohren gehauen bekomme. Die Entwicklung in diesem Hörbuch kann ich viel besser nachvollziehen, und die jeweils neuen Fähigkeiten machen auch wirklich einen Unterschied. Dadurch bleibt es wirklich die ganze Zeit über spannend und nachvollziehbar.

Ich finde auch schön, dass sich der Autor sehr eng an die klassischen RPG-Elemente hält. Mir scheint, dass viele andere Leser/Hörer einen weiter ausholenden und komplexeren Ansatz mögen. Für mich verzetteln sich aber zu viele LitRPG-Romane zu sehr auf Nebenschauplätzen, in denen es mehr um Gesellschaft, Götter, ewig lange Dialoge etc. als um das eigentliche RPG-Erlebnis geht. He who fights monsters ist für mich ein gutes Beispiel: Anfangs war ich sehr begeistert, verlor aber zunehmend das Interesse, weil es mir zu viel um Aspekte ging, die für mich keine wirkliche Bedeutung hatten.

Total begeistert bin ich auch vom (englischsprachigen) Sprecher. Die Aussprache ist kristallklar und abwechslungsreich. Dies ist das erste englischsprachige Hörbuch, in dem ich meist vergessen kann, dass es nicht auf Deutsch ist.

So, nun muss ich mir den Folgeteil herunterladen. Der 1. Teil geht bald zuende. ;)

Nice! I need more!

Endlich mal wieder eine anständige Story mit einem MC der Köpfchen beweist und kein totaler Trottel ist. Das Universum das Tom Elliot da erschaffen hat, hat viel Potential und ich bin gespannt was er daraus macht. Wer "He who fights with monsters" mag, wird auch hier seinen Spaß haben.

Ich freue mich auf den nächsten Teil und hoffe, dass dieser bald erscheint.

Ok story with some drawbacks if you are a purist

The setup is quite standard for Lit-RPG: the main character (« MC ») ends up in a new world with gaming components (levels, characteristics, skills, etc.) and battles to get stronger.

As a purist (hardcore RPG player for 30+ years) I like a good challenge, meaning that I dislike « godmode ». Unfortunately, this story has some of that: the MC can achieve anything and everything, he can fight and kill monsters and other players twice his level, and in 2 weeks of gaming time, he has the same level as others who have been in the game for years. Oh, and for some reason he gets out of every situation thanks to full heal potions, which he used liberally and with no cool-down (while his foes never do).

All this spoilt my fun, which is a pity because otherwise the author does a decent job of storytelling. I would probably have kept going without the above-mentioned issues, but as it is, the story lost interest for me.
