Inhaltsangabe

"The audiobook read by Lauren Ezzo makes for compulsive, edge-of-seat listening."—Buzzfeed

"Ezzo's dark tone and emotional connection terrify and comfort listeners in equal measure. Not for the faint of heart."—AudioFile Magazine

Titanic meets The Shining in S.A. Barnes’ Dead Silence, a SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn't yet ended.

Claire Kovalik is days away from being unemployed—made obsolete—when her beacon repair crew picks up a strange distress signal. With nothing to lose and no desire to return to Earth, Claire and her team decide to investigate.

What they find at the other end of the signal is a shock: the Aurora, a famous luxury space-liner that vanished on its maiden tour of the solar system more than twenty years ago. A salvage claim like this could set Claire and her crew up for life. But a quick trip through the Aurora reveals something isn’t right.

Whispers in the dark. Flickers of movement. Words scrawled in blood. Claire must fight to hold onto her sanity and find out what really happened on the Aurora, before she and her crew meet the same ghastly fate.

Kritikerstimmen

"This story slides and slithers from creepy and atmospheric to skin-crawling, edge-of-your-seat terror." —T. Kingfisher, author of The Hollow Places

"Barnes ably conjures the kind of haunting setting and atmosphere required for this Event Horizon-esque novel, providing an effective sense of immediacy to Claire's frequently shifting and at times tenuous grip on reality. Recommended for fans of claustrophobic space horror."—Booklist

Dead Silence mixes horror, mystery and sci-fi into a thrill ride sure to shock you out of your reading rut. ...a claustrophobic race against time as the ship’s horrors begin to affect the crew one by one. Dread slowly builds as small, frightening moments inside the Aurora multiply, showcasing Barnes’ patient plotting and steady pacing. This is one of those time-warp books—the ones where you look away from the clock, then look back and it’s suddenly way past your bedtime.”—BookPage, Starred Review

Emotionally driven decision making

The setting and early hints of the story are promising. Scene descriptions are spine-chilling. Everything points towards proper space horror. So ... what could possibly go wrong?

The main character, i.e. the Team Lead (which is kind of the captain) is insecure, emotionally driven, and socially underdeveloped. You're forced to listen to the tiring musings of a 14 year old. (I apologize to all 14 year olds for stereotyping. You didn't deserve this.) Plans are developed on the go, decisions are made solely for emotional self-gratification, wrong decisions can not be changed because of fear of losing face. This character is entirely unfit to lead a team as well as build a connection to me, as a listener.

I quit after 3h.

Fine

Story is fine, I was hoping for a bit more…spooky atmosphere. But it’s okay. And at some points, the narrator got a tiny bit too expressive for my liking. But all in all a good ghost ship story.

2.5 star rating

the horror was great, very atmospheric - the characterization was less so, mostly everyone was annoying

Overdramatic

I think this should have been a movie. This book lives on the literal equivalent to jump scares with all the sudden gore and turning around to face a dead body, so if that's something you're into, then this is the book for you. I'm not personally and so I found this incredibly grating. Add to that the overdramatic narration of the voice actress (I can tell she gave it her and good for her, but having to constantly adjust the volume so she wouldn't randomly scream and cry into my ears was really annoying) and, well, I still found this boring.
I did appreciate the integration of a mystery that has only semi-recently been cleared up, as in the main plot twist of that book fits what most likely happened on that mountain and so I will not say anything else to that, but it was just a tad bit underwhelming considering how paranormal the rest of the book felt, especially with how quickly people just went all out to kill themselves and especially each other.
The tragic past of the MC really distracted from the current horror and completely stopped adding anything to the story aside from the author using said tragic past to desperately try and convince us that the narrator isn't a reliable one. Which was already a given considering how and where we meet the MC.
The characters also never truly managed to matter to me, some of them felt way too stereotypical while others remained so flat I didn't even flinch when they died in some gruesome way, I just kept thinking "again?"
There's also the small issue that nothing really makes sense. There's no real commitment to the paranormal part of the story, but there's just enough commitment to it that the scientific, logical explanation also felt too simple. The world building could have been a bit more thorough and if you're going to include such a tragic backstory, then please explain it a bit more. I think the reason why I found this book so grating and exhausting to read was that the actual horror was just jump scares and slasher scenes but lacked emotional depth. I only cared about very few of the characters and I hate nothing more than gratuitous killing for no reason than to be shocking. Which is exactly what this book is filled with and so I didn't care.
I have to admit I did like the ending, it's pretty closed and not entirely devastating (trying not to spoil anyone here), so that worked for me.
