It's nearly Christmas in Oxford, and Detective Inspector Bridget Hart is enjoying a rare day off at Oxford's Christmas Market. A ghost tour seems like a fun way to round off the day. Until, that is, a brutal murder brings the evening to a tragic close.

Not the great-grandmother of 91 years
For this series by now a familiar pattern has emerged: about two thirds into the story there emerges a bunch of subsequent suspects who all seem to have motive, the opportunity and means to have been the murderer. And by then there is second corpse, so it is a serial killer the team hunts. And at the very last moment Inspector Bridget Hart has a hunch and it turns out that it really is someone else. Someone who made a short appearance before but was in no way a suspect.
Small spoiler: since I have already listened to two books of the series (thank you audible!) I was half expecting that the great-grandmother of 91 years could turn out to be the killer. But no ....
However, since this kind of pattern is familiar to fans of Agatha Christie and the story isa well told, often quite gripping with protagonists you can feel for, I will continue to follow it.

Solid police procedurals
I quite enjoyed this series (books no. 3 and 7 not as much as the other five). The books are solid police procedurals, nothing fancy or exciting, but quite fun. The main character and her team are likeable, the cases mostly entertaining (even though they're not always realistic).
I didn't much like the narrator at first, she tries (unsuccessfully) to imitate male voices and makes every male character sound gruffy and old and slightly ridiculous. That really annoyed me at first, but I got used to it. Her regular voice and accent are quite pleasant.

Almost too many Clichés and parenting advice to bear
The speaker, however, has much improved and sounds even more likeable and down to earth.

Really good
It‘s getting better and better, but one probably really appreciates this when one reads the books in their order. Without having read the previous instalments this book on its own is good, but put into context with the others and the stories around Bridget and her team this is super enjoyable. Can‘t wait to listen the next instalment. By the way, also Esther Wane is getting better and better, I did not like her that much in the beginning, now I think that her reading is really strong.

Not very convincing
This time it was more difficult to guess the identity of the killer than in the previous volumes (mainly because the solution is of the far-fetched, plainly ridiculous variety), but what really annoyed me were the three emotionally crippled detectives, especially Bridget, whose incompetence as mother, daughter, girlfriend (whatever does Jonathan see in her?!), and even as a detective reaches a whole new level. And why do we need to hear the personal backstory of those three characters again and again - repeated more than once in every single volume of this series? Even if we hadn’t read the preceding volumes - there’s no need to add this unnecessary baggage to a story that isn’t exactly fast paced anyway.
