Inhaltsangabe
'Reading The Honey Witch is like dreaming in a fragrant sunlit garden while bees sing around you. It's a gorgeous book, with a lovely cottagecore ambience and a heart-warming sapphic romance intertwined with unique magic that enchants the imagination' India Holton, internationally bestselling author
The Honey Witch of Innisfree can never find true love. That is her curse to bear. But when a young woman who doesn't believe in magic arrives on her island, sparks fly in this deliciously sweet debut novel of magic, hope, and love overcoming all.
Twenty-one-year-old Marigold Claude has always preferred the company of the spirits of the meadow to any of the suitors who've tried to woo her. So when her grandmother whisks her away to the family cottage on the tiny Isle of Innisfree with an offer to train her as the next Honey Witch, she accepts immediately. But her newfound magic and independence come with a price: No one can fall in love with the Honey Witch.
When Lottie Burke, a notoriously grumpy skeptic who doesn't believe in magic, shows up on her doorstep, Marigold can't resist the challenge to prove to her that magic is real. But soon, Marigold begins to care for Lottie in ways she never expected. And when darker magic awakens and threatens to destroy her home, she must fight for much more than her new home-at the risk of losing her magic and her heart..
A delicious debut that combines the swoon-worthy romance of Bridgerton and the whimsical sorcery of Practical Magic, with a dash of The Secret Life of Bees thrown in for good fun.
Kritikerstimmen
'As effervescent as a bottle of sparkling mead, The Honey Witch charms with every sentence. Shields writes with a fierce, uncynical honesty that will have you believing in soulmates, uncovering magic everywhere, and embracing your own wildness' S.T. Gibson, author of An Education in Malice
'Gorgeously lyrical and utterly addicting' Rebecca Thorne, author of Can't Spell Treason Without Tea
'Enchanting, whimsical, and firmly rooted in finding yourself after loss, this novel will break your heart and then soothe it with magic honey. Pour yourself a cup of tea, drizzle in some local honey, and let this decadent book transport you' Breanne Randall, author of The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic

WHAT A LETDOWN.
I deeply regret preordering the 13-hour-long audiobook as this prevented me from returning it. I pushed through it—but at what cost?
This book was one of my most anticipated reads of the year because it was comped to LEGENDS & LATTES and THE VERY SECRET SOCIETY OF IRREGULAR WITCHES. I feel insulted on behalf of both of those titles. They’re fun and cozy and have unique characters and an actual plot.
In THE HONEY WITCH, everything feels extremely superficial. Even the writing itself: all tell and no show. Atmospheric? Nope. Charming? Nope. Bland and boring. Wasted potential in every direction.
At the 40% mark, I thought to myself, ‘Wow. We could’ve started here, and it wouldn’t’ve made a lick of difference.’ In retrospect, we should’ve started at 60% in the earliest. Every sliver of tension was squashed by convenience within seconds. I kept waiting for something to happen and it just… didn’t. Don’ t get me wrong, I came for a slow and cozy story. But there wasn’t story as such. The pace didn’t drag; it didn’t exist.
I know I’m coming down on this book very harshly, but I’m FRUSTRATED and DISAPPOINTED and had such high hopes 💔😭
Like, let’s take her magic and the bees, for example. She immediately knew how to do everything, make potions. No learning curve, nothing. What’s the point in that? I would’ve loved to see her experiment, interact with the villagers more than twice, forge a stronger bond with the community.
And then the “romance”. My GOD. It completely threw me off-kilter (and I say this as a queer woman who lives for WLW romances). A weird, insta-love-in-hindsight plot device that went from zero to a hundred out of nowhere. (on Instagram, the author claimed there’s “spice” in this book and, um, where exactly?)
The snail narration of the audiobook didn’t help. As a neurodivergent individual, I relish a good British drawl, but this narrator drew out every syllable and didn’t bother switching up her voice or tone, keeping a flat intonation throughout. And so, for the first time in my fifteen years of non-stop audiobooking, I increased the listening speed. It was *that* bad. Just to get it over with. In retrospect, I could’ve skipped chapters and it wouldn’t have mattered, but I didn’t want to risk missing Plot if it arrived after all.
TL;DR: Big nope energy.
