beautiful book, spanning generations
It is easily felt that this story has been well lived in and explored by the writer or people close to him. As someone who was born in India, I felt the author really understood the nuances of colonialism as felt by the rural areas of South India.
I felt the characters were a bit pure and followed clean lines, which feels a bit unnatural to me, but I couldn't help rooting for them against waves of death and tragedies, always retaining hope.
31 hours was a long listen, but I am glad I stuck with it.

One of the best books I have read or listened to
Dense and moving. Written without drama although full of drama. So many pages but no page too many. Wonderful.

Amazing
Beautiful writing, managing to stay interesting and to build story and character arcs across a wide time span of multiple generations. The narration by the author, with the different voices and accents, brought the story to life. I could imagine the scene and setting, even though he didn't spend too much time on mundane descriptions.

Ein grossartiges, aussergewöhnliches Buch. MUST READ!
Man braucht etwas um sich auf das indisch leicht gefärbte Englisch einzustellen, ebenso den längeren Aufbau dieser Generationen umspannenden Geschichte. Je länger man liest umso interessanter wird es. Vielleicht bedingt auch das Eine das Andere. Auf jeden Fall ist dies eine großartige und sehr vielseitige Geschichte, einfühlsam geschrieben - absolut empfehlenswert.

A lovely if sad story of 3 generations
It was great to have the author read it and pronounce the names, places and medical terms. It was so easy to listen for a while and get back into.

Wow
Beautifully written and narrated. What a wonderful journey, learning about the different aspects of parts of India and what she and her people went through. Love the depth of the story and characters, came beautifully together. Verghese and his team are talented.
