The classic samurai novel about the real exploits of the most famous swordsman.
Miyamoto Musashi was the child of an era when Japan was emerging from decades of civil strife. Lured to the great Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 by the hope of becoming a samurai - without really knowing what it meant - he regains consciousness after the battle to find himself lying defeated, dazed, and wounded among thousands of the dead and dying. On his way home, he commits a rash act, becomes a fugitive, and brings life in his own village to a standstill - until he is captured by a weaponless Zen monk.
The lovely Otsu, seeing in Musashi her ideal of manliness, frees him from his tortuous punishment, but he is recaptured and imprisoned. During three years of solitary confinement, he delves into the classics of Japan and China. When he is set free again, he rejects the position of samurai and for the next several years pursues his goal relentlessly, looking neither to the left nor to the right.
Ever so slowly it dawns on him that following the way of the sword is not simply a matter of finding a target for his brute strength. Continually striving to perfect his technique, which leads him to a unique style of fighting with two swords simultaneously, he travels far and wide, challenging fighters of many disciplines, taking nature to be his ultimate and severest teacher and undergoing the rigorous training of those who follow the way. He is supremely successful in his encounters, but in The Art of War, he perceives the way of peaceful and prosperous governance and disciplines himself to be a real human being.
He becomes a reluctant hero to a host of people whose lives he has touched and by whom he has been touched. Inevitably, he has to pit his skill against the naked blade of his greatest rival.
Musashi is a novel in the best tradition of Japanese storytelling. It is a living story, subtle and imaginative, teeming with memorable characters, many of them historical. Interweaving themes of unrequited love, misguided revenge, filial piety, and absolute dedication to the way of the samurai, it depicts vividly a world Westerners know only vaguely. Full of gusto and humor, it has an epic quality and universal appeal.

Masterful Classic
Great classic Samurai story, sweeping narrative reflecting classic perceptions of Samurai life and philosophy, and insights into the early Edo period. Only missing strong female characters, but the books were written 100 years ago, so therein a reflection of their time as well.

WOW!!! Der absolute Hammer!!

Better than expected
The speaker is extra class, He flows like water and coveys the story with the right energy. The story is full of wit and wisdom. The characters are interesting. It reminds me of Dostojewski only with more dynamic.

An epic less about swords but more about life
Extremely well read and interpreted.
An mind opening epic on the - slightly fictionised - life o a Japanese icon. From his rebirth as a human being until the moment that settled his name among the greatest, Musashi is constantly humbled by the great lessons found in every corner of life itself.

Ably narrated barrage of adolescent cringeworthiness
In case you are wondering if this book is for you, let me try to give you an idea:
Imagine watching an anime show. A smug teenager armed with a samurai sword walks into a tea house and confronts a one-dimensional douche who is harassing the waitress. The confrontation goes something like this:
“Watch your mouth, weakling! I will destroy you!”
“You should be watching your mouth, because you are the weak one”
“No, i’m strong and i will destroy you because of you being so weak”
After an unnecessary amount of redundant and childish back and forth, the evil guy is nimbly beaten by the smug teenager protagonist, who then goes on to celebrate his victory by making a last wannabe witty comment. A minute later, the same hero whose coolness was supposed to be mindblowing, suddenly blushes and stutters like a school boy when approached by a female charakter.
Do you imagine such an anime (of which there are many) to be entertaining and worth a watch? If yes, go ahead and buy this audio book!
Do think animes like that are unenjoyable pubertal cringe? If yes, do not buy this book.
When i read about the influence this book has on japanese pop culture i really expected something different. I came to realize this book is the forefather of everything i hated about many anime i’ve seen through the years (not all are bad of course): flat charakters, lazy plot, lots of wannabe coolness and wittiness, and a never ending amount of absolute cringeworthy dialogue.
It has to be mentioned though, that the narrator is doing a great job with the material that is given to him!
