Kazuo Ishiguro
England, 1930s: Christopher Banks has become the country's most celebrated detective, his cases the talk of London society. Yet one unsolved crime has always haunted him: the mysterious disappearance of his parents, in old Shanghai, when he was a small boy.
Moving between London and Shanghai of the interwar years, When We Were Orphans is a remarkable story of memory, intrigue and the need to return.

The book is read by the best voice actor I’ve come across for years. What a pleasure!
Intriguing and powerful novel

Do not waste your time, the story is painfully slow and I begrudgingly listened to the whole thing (and regret it).
First Ishiguro novel - 80% of this book was real slog

What a depressing book about self-deception. I was at first intrigued to read about a detective who does not reveal much about his cases, but became increasingly irritated and even annoyed by his arrogance, particularly his oblivion to what is going on around him and how people really feel. If Ishiguro intended this reaction he succeeded, but at the cost of losing my interest in reading other novels he has written. Only with additional research does the reader have an idea of the slaughter in Shanghai. Particularly the ending leaves the reader wondering what positive message the author intends to convey: all illusions about Christopher's parents are destroyed, his adopted daughter is suicidal and Christopher doubts any value in the life he has led. His only consolation is he believes his mother always loved him, even though she had lost most of her memory in her later years.
