The Monarchs, the most powerful sacred artists on Cradle, rule with unquestioned authority. They are mysterious and distant, and catching a glimpse of one is privilege enough for a lifetime. To meet one is to come face-to-face with a legend.

Now, they have all gathered in one place, bringing their heirs and greatest students together for a competition to determine whose successor is the best in the world:

The Uncrowned King tournament.

Heavy cliffhanger and downright depressing ending. Mixed feeling about everything... Can't wait to see how this will play out in the next book.

What a rotten ending.

awesome book

Up until now this is by far the worst book of the series. The main character gets absolutely disgraced by the author in a number of ways. From breaking character just to make a stupid and unnecessary plot point work to losing fights that should by all means be impossible to lose with the tools at his disposal. Really dampened my enthusiasm to continue but I will anyway since all prior books were much better and I hope this was just an outlier.

Just… why?

lazy writing leading to contrived conflict.

If you listen to this you'll know. The End itself is actually pretty good but the plot contrivance to get there is dumb.
so dumb.

also, the book lacks some important scenes.
