The best-selling author of The Big Switch returns with an explosive look at technology’s effect on the mind.

“Is Google making us stupid?” When Nicholas Carr posed that question in an Atlantic Monthly cover story, he tapped into a well of anxiety about how the internet is changing us. He also crystallized one of the most important debates of our time: As we enjoy the internet’s bounties, are we sacrificing our ability to read and think deeply?

Now, Carr expands his argument into the most compelling exploration yet published of the internet’s intellectual and cultural consequences. Weaving insights from philosophy, neuroscience, and history into a rich narrative, The Shallows explains how the internet is rerouting our neural pathways, replacing the subtle mind of the book reader with the distracted mind of the screen watcher. A gripping story of human transformation played out against a backdrop of technological upheaval, The Shallows will forever alter the way we think about media and our minds.

Though it was written just before mobile phones and social media really took off and started to define a generation with its ubiquitous presence (not to mention TikTok and YouTube Shorts) and when it talks briefly about AI it now feels quite outdated but that doesn't take away that this books has some really good insights into our current media landscape and how it shapes us.

It feels like a great follow-up for Amusing Ourselves to Death but updated for the internet and without the grumpy old man attitude of the former.

I recommend it to anyone also interested in these kinds of things. Now for someone to make a book about AI.

The narrator is also excellent even though he absolutely butchered every Dutch name that happened to be mentioned in the book. But that’s more of a nitpick because I’m Dutch myself :p

Interesting to listen to, but after cutting all the bla bla you could summarise it in 5 bullet points

Interesting, but not life changing...

This book elaborates on various effects that modern technology has on it's neuro plasticity. All despriptions of the author are supported by studies.

gives you all the info you need without coming across as preachy or condescending. Really encourages you thinking about what changes you want to make for yourself and if you even should

informative and not preachy
