Two good neighbors make the best of a bad Valentine’s Day in a funny and improbably romantic short story by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Just for the Summer.
It’s Valentine’s Day weekend, and Charlotte and Seth are not looking for romance. Armed with emotional-support bear spray, Charlotte is in self-imposed isolation and on guard from men. Having a stalker can do that to a person’s nerves. Just across the hall and giving off woodsy vibes is Seth, a recently divorced arborist. As in today recently. Heights, he’s fine with. Trust? Not so much. But when disaster traps them one flight up and no way down, an outrageously precarious predicament forces a tree-loving guy and a rattled girl next door to embrace their captivity. Soon their defenses are breaking away. Considering how close they both are to the edge, Charlotte and Seth could be in danger of falling—in love.

“Narrators Julia Whelan and Connor Crais deliver unique performances in this short yet moving audiobook.… The narrators' performances offer a full experience. Each portrays their respective character's dialogue throughout the entire audiobook, which gives depth to the highly focused story. The majority takes place over a weekend, when the main characters come alive with their expert delivery. While most romances cover a longer time period, this one emphasizes the impact of a moment and the potential of a fresh start.”—AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner
The Fall Risk is the perfect short love story—sweet, sincere, and surprisingly profound for its length. Abby Jimenez somehow manages to pack an entire emotional journey into just a few chapters, and I’m still in awe of how much depth and meaning this story held.
Seth and Charlotte’s connection feels instantly genuine. Their flirtatious banter sparkles, and Seth’s romantic gestures had me swooning. The chemistry between them is magnetic, and I found myself smiling through so many of their moments together. For such a brief read, the story feels full and complete, which is no small feat. That said, I wouldn’t have minded just a touch more spice!
What truly elevates the experience is the narration. Connor Crais and Julia Whelan are a dream team. Their voices bring Seth and Charlotte to life in such a vivid way that I felt like I was right there with them. The emotion, timing, and delivery were pitch-perfect from start to finish.
Whether you’re a longtime Abby Jimenez fan or new to her work, The Fall Risk is a must-listen—a warm, witty, and heartfelt love story that lingers well after the final word.
