“Ingenious and beguiling.” - Time

“Crichton keeps us guessing at every turn in his best work since The Andromeda Strain.” - Los Angeles Times

“Sphere may be Crichton’s best novel, but even if it ranked only second or third, it would be a must for suspense fans.” - Miami Herald

A classic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Crichton, Sphere is a bravura demonstration of what he does better than anyone: riveting storytelling that combines frighteningly plausible, cutting-edge science and technology with pulse-pounding action and serious chills. The gripping story of a group of American scientists sent to the ocean floor to investigate an alien ship, only to confront a terrifying discovery that defies imagination, Sphere is Crichton prime - truly masterful fiction from the ingenious mind that brought us Prey, State of Fear, and Jurassic Park.

Sphere was made into a film directed by Barry Levinson, which starred Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson.

"A page-turner with oomph.... Crichton's writing is cinematic, with powerful visual images and nonstop action." --Newsweek

Don‘t know if thats a good thing. The writing was at some times more of a screenplay. The ideas were fantastic but the characters were hardly fleshed out.

Gave me a massive headache and anxiety

Sehr gut gemacht

I read this book relatively soon after it was published – around 1990. Now I listened to it again. It's still terrific in many ways. It's thrilling. It's oddly atmospheric. At it's time it was a paradigm of an entire genre. From today's perspective however it's also a bit stale. The characters seem stereotypical –though maybe they're rather prototypical–; in any case they're boring. The story itself is full of logical flaws and shortcuts; lots of loose ends; easy ways out. Not to say that still doesn't happen today. But today such a book wouldn't acquire as much acclaim.

What struck me most after so many years was how pervasive racism and sexism still were in the 1980s. While the story means to deal with and expose these phenomena the corresponding sections are also infused with that very same way of thinking. One needs to remind oneself how very different society still was at our parents' time.

Enjoyed it very much. Awesome insight in people and science and of course excitement to the last paragraph.

A real Crichton!
