Ein Buch, dass auch dazu anregt, dass Heute zu betrachten und Privilegien wie Frieden, Demokratie und Bildung nicht als selbstverständlich hinzunehmen.
Ein wunderbares Buch

Nevertheless ‘Olga’ is nothing bad. The first part is classic Schlink, rightly paced and well written (by the highest literary standards) But the second part, where the typical schlinkish narrator pops up is a bad copy of ‘Die Heimkehr’ with all the researches and negociations and travels and fair love affairs - and I’ve lost interest. The third part is a compilation of Olga’s fictitious letters to her fiancé never returned from a mad Northern expedition and if they were read by a female voice I would sometimes believe they are not written by Mr. Schlink in a rush. All in all readable for beginners in Schlink but less than mediocre for fans: symbols poorly explored (the maniac running of Herbert, the losses in Olga’s life, the becoming deaf) but the so-called secrets are tiny and predictable, and the neverending 6 hours of the listen are unnecessarily overcharged with events of German history. If written in the 80’s maybe, this would have been more relevant.
Yes, Olga’s life is a superbe exemple of strength, acceptance and patience, but I suppose she would be not particularly amazed to know that a whole novel was born about her forgettable existence on Earth. Actually, what’s the point?
I give five stars because of the first part. Because of nostalgia, if you like. I suspect I am not still old enough to appreciate the fine art of Mr. Schlink. I’ll come back to him later. When I’m sixty-four…
Piece of a master - Not a masterpiece
