Bren is a veteran mercenary trying to make an honest living with Dwarven gold before the winter.
When a Dwarven merchant named Mannion offers him one gold piece to guard a caravan north to Stoneforge, it sounds like his big break. One Dwarven gold piece can keep a man comfortable for a year in Dawnbreak. A simple road, and easy money. The Dwarven Empire of Stoneforge is the greatest civilization in the known world. Its mountains go deep. Its vaults are vast. Its Gnome slaves are restless.
Trouble is brewing, and a massive rebellion is already underway in the dark shadows of the mountain. He faces a dark road, as the stubborn empire refuses to see their own demise. Together with an old comrade, an elf who barely speaks the common tongue, and a halfing girl who he doesn't entirely trust, Bren will march into one of the biggest "fallen Dwarf Empire" tropes in the history of fantasy.
