A world on the precipice of the apocalypse. A secret forged in the flames of war.
A chance to start over.
For John Sutton, only one of those three things matters.
Retired from a decade of brutal war, he wants nothing more than a quiet pastoral life while he does his best to stem the steady increase of his Doom Points before they hit 100, signaling the start of the end.
He’s been given a small farm on the outskirts of the empire as a thanks for his service, but no matter how far he travels, it’s impossible to escape the war’s devastating effects on the world.
Bandits, suspicious townsfolk, a mysterious pair of siblings, and a secret that lurks in the mountains all threaten John’s peace. It will take all of his considerable power to keep from burning everything to the ground.

I enjoy the characters and their development and the voice acting is amazing.
The main character is overpowered but he still has room to grow (in ability and emotional). And with the coming doom (whatever that really means), who knows what will happen.
Slow slice of life with great world building

the one thing holding it back is unfortunately part of the setting, that the mc is basically one of or the strongest person in the world. for me at least the absolute overpoweredness lead to it being devoid of any tension throughout the book. the very few occasions where not everything goes according to the mc's plan its all due to him holding himself back, since if he really wanted to he could solve basically everything with snap of his fingers.
while i do enjoy a god mode cheat once in a while having it on all the time get's old rather fast though.
the author's way of putting a limit on the character is the coming apocalypse which is drawing nearer everytime the mc is using his magic (in the form of doom points)
on a positive note the side characters do have some depth, act believably for the most part. the story itself is also well done.
i rate the audiobook as a good listen,
A good fantasy story with some flaws
