'Beautiful? For whom? Why, for myself, of course.'
Deemed as a masterpiece upon publication by the likes of Marcel Proust and André Gide, Chéri is Colette's daring romance between an older woman and a younger man.
Léa de Lonval, a wealthy, beautiful forty-nine-year-old courtesan, is coming to the end of her career. Her lover, the young and fiercely handsome Fred Peloux – otherwise known as Chéri – is having to face his own reality, with an advantageous marriage arranged by his mother on the horizon. Both lovers, despite their six-year history, reluctantly decide it's time to end their affair. Yet their connection is more difficult to let go of than either of them care to admit… A moving tale of unexpected connection, betrayal and love, Chéri remains a timeless novella that continues to captivate readers to this day.
Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (1873 – 1954), known as 'Colette', was a French author, journalist and actress. Famed for her vivid writing style, her literary works often explored desire, relationships and the natural world through a feminine lens. In 1948, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
