The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 - "Q" is for "question mark". A world that bears a question.

Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame's and Tengo's narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell's, 1Q84 is Haruki Murakami's most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

Kritikerröster

"Murakami is like a magician who explains what he's doing as he performs the trick and still makes you believe he has supernatural powers.... But while anyone can tell a story that resembles a dream, it's the rare artist, like this one, who can make us feel that we are dreaming it ourselves." ( The New York Times Book Review)

The narrators were first class. They accompanied me for a month for more than an hour a day. The plot was thin but intruiging, sometimes one time too öfter spiced up by explicit descriptions. Still by the meticulous self-reflections and silent dialogues there were intruiging private histories told. The last fifth of the third book was just boring, plotless and the repetitious explanations didn' t explain anything at all any more. When they meet the thoughts and dialogues become just cheesy. And the ending ist unimaginative and weak. So maybe stop after Tengo leaves the sanatorium and imagine the rest?

slow, reflecting, insightfulful images, boring ending

This should be a mandatory lecture, incorporated in the curricula for colleges for literature.
This book deserves a the highest book price for its impressive narrative capabilities

Lecture for schools

If you read Murakami you know what you get. But sadly this was too long for my taste, in some parts it feels drawn out. And I know that Murakami writes somewhat flawed male protagonist but this one was the worst. The performance was good.

Sadly one of Murakamis lesser works

This was exceptional. I wrote in an early reading update that I feel like this trilogy is more like a slowly unraveling piece of art and I still stand by it.
This series is probably not something for people who enjoy fast and action packed stories but for people who enjoy a slowly developing plot and an intricately detailed world building with interesting and complex characters. This story and its characters felt incredibly real to me and I feel a bit lost now that I've finished this almost 1000 pages long book after listening to it every night for two months.

If you're interested I HIGHLY recommend you to listen to the audiobook from audible narrated by Allison Hiroto, Marc Vietor and Mark Boyett. It's perfect.

Exceptional

So far my least favorite of Haruki Murakami, very repetitive, at times quite boring and somehow flat. Flawless reading though.
