Retired police detective Hans Schmidt spends his quiet, lonely days on the outskirts of town, haunted by the loss of his beloved wife and wrestling with his own dark memories. Ten years ago, while serving as the village policeman, Hans investigated the brutal murder of an eighteen-year-old student in the marshlands south of Maribo. The horrific crime left deep, unhealable scars across the small Danish community. Now, having served his full sentence, the killer, Simon, is out of prison-and he has returned to the scene of the crime. Simon is no longer the same young man who went away. Having lost his parents while incarcerated, he returns as a quiet man haunted by the bloody memories of his crime, hoping only to settle his family's estate and perhaps find a fresh start. But the town is unwilling to forgive, and his sudden reappearance ignites fear and fury. Nowhere is this anger more explosive than within the Wild Eagles, a ruthless local motorcycle gang. Hardened, lawless, and operating out of a fortified compound by their own violent code, the bikers are eager for an excuse to exact brutality. They have their own lethal account to settle with Simon and are determined to dish out merciless vigilante justice. As tension explodes and the gang's shadowy network prepares to plunge the region into an all-out war, Hans is forced out of retirement and back into the fray to maintain order. Aided by Louise Andersen-a haunted young female police investigator from Copenhagen trying to rebuild her own broken life in the quiet village-Hans must outmaneuver the ruthless gang and stop a deadly domino effect before the entire community drowns in a new wave of violence.
