In the Celestial Empire, a land ruled by Immortals and stalked by Spirits and Beasts, a young girl from the slums of an unimportant city is found to have the Talent that may allow her to become an Immortal herself. Sent to the storied Argent Peak Sect to harness her talent, she must work desperately to catch up to peers who have been preparing to walk the Way for years. The Sect grants new students only three months to prepare and grow before the true challenges begin and the disciples are freed to battle each other for resources and strength.

The world moves and it waits for none. Assigned by the Duchess to investigate the strange foreigners who were encountering in dialogue with the tribes of the mountains, Ling Qi, Cai Renxiang, and their companions must take a perilous journey through the wild mountains, and see what can be made of their intentions. A difficult and none-too-popular task, for the people of the Empire have only ever met barbarians with war. Or have they, history is not as simple as it seems.

Awoken as an Immortal, Ling Qi must contend with her peers on the mountain now that the great truce enforced by the Elders of the Sect is no longer in effect. In an Outer Sect increasingly falling into two camps, her friendships have made where she stands clear. To continue climbing the steep mountain of cultivation and maintain the friendships and allies she had gathered to her side, she must strive like never before. But it soon becomes clear that there is someone watching her from the shadows...someone with an unhealthy interest in her advancement.

Ling Qi's time in the Argent Peak Sect has come to an end. She is the Baroness Ling, retainer to the heiress of the Emerald Seas, and her duty is to oversee and mediate the Summit, which she and Cai Renxiang have struggled to make take place. On it rides the chance to weave a fragile peace with the strange people who live beyond the high southern mountains and the tribesmen of the Cloud who align with them. War is already at the Empire's doorstep; this will be their chance to limit the number of foes they must face.

Advancement has come quickly to Ling Qi. With help from strong allies and connections, her foe has been defeated. The enemies of the alliance she has helped to build have surrendered. Her talent no longer goes unnoticed in the Celestial Empire, casting new eyes on her path. Those like her are accounted for; a title of nobility is within her reach...a prize with implications that will stretch over her now long life.

The peace of the Sect has been broken. Incursions come from the nomadic tribes of the southern mountains and from deep underground. Against these foes of the Empire—both old and new—Ling Qi and her allies will be set to test themselves. It is said that conflict is the great whetstone of talent, but war may devour the genius and the common talent alike without differentiation. What is to be gained and what is to be lost as the fires grow?

The tournament is past, the Inner Sect achieved, and Ling Qi has chosen the path of her life going forward. Retainer to the heir of the province, an absurd step up from a girl who lived on the street a year before. Now she faces a strange prospect, peace. There are no great tournaments in her immediate future, no desperate battles to maintain her station. Formal duels and skill challenges just aren't the same. But she has much to learn, and now that she has proven herself, the Argent Peak Sect has much to teach an inner disciple.

Ling Qi's mastery of the realm of Dreams grows, and her strides carry her further daily. Meeting the skeletal echo again in his jail of twisted space has only reinforced that. But her time is not infinite; there is only so much she can Master and learn before the great undertaking she has taken up must bear fruit. The Summit between her home and the foreigners of the Polar Nation looms, and with it, the chance to head off further conflict and prevent the embers of war that have already ignited in the south from growing further.

The world is in motion, and Ling Qi can hardly count the number of loose ends and new business she has to tie up. Her great task lies before her, a great summit with the people of the south to determine what the future will be. Still, the Argent Peak Sect stirs to war with both the tribes of the sky and the creatures of the deep earth. But first comes the great end-of-year tournament. She is not a participant this time but an observer, and all the more enmeshed in politics that swirl around it.
