Two historians discover 1,000 pounds of double eagle $20 gold pieces that were hidden in a San Francisco basement for 150 years. But to get the gold they have to outsmart a street gang and beat a fleet of bulldozers to the vault site.

Why would someone kill a miner, freeze his body solid on a glacier, and then drop it alongside the Juneau wharf, the one place where United States Marshal Gordon Whitford would be sure to find it? Does it have anything to do with the 250 pounds of gold that have just been extracted from the Alaska Gastineau Mine? And how were both the frozen body and the gold able to disappear off a steamship that made no stops between Juneau and Seattle?

Cadzow, a full-blooded Athabaskan Native, becomes a pawn in a high stakes gamble by a malicious Juneau mine owner. Cadzow is falsely accused of robbery, and the mine owner anticipates that Cadzow will be caught and hanged. Since the native cannot reveal where the money was hidden, the mine owner, who had robbed his own mine, would end up with the money. But Cadzow is not stupid. He steps free of the trap and escapes across the Mendenhall Glacier into Canada ahead of the posse on his trail - led by the greedy mine owner.

The Alaska Gold Rush is one of the most misunderstood eras of American history. In fact, many American think the Klondike Strike made famous by Jack London and Robert Service is the Alaska Gold Rush. Actually, the Klondike Strike was a 16-month stampede centered in Dawson in the Yukon Territory of Canada. The Alaska Gold Rush started in 1880 and lasted until World War II. What made it so unusual was that many of the sourdoughs never left.

February 5, 1898. Witnesses report a giant orange fireball reflected in the glacial waters of Alaska's Lynn Canal. At the height of Klondike gold fever, the Clara Nevada disappeared into an epic storm - taking passengers and priceless cargo with it. Was the explosion an accident or a robbery gone wrong? Did Captain C.H. Lewis make off with $165,000 ($13.6 million in today's currency) in raw gold? Or was the sinking a case of a sea-weary steamer meeting an untimely end?

In this lively narrative Steven C. Levi captures the color and the riches of the Alaska Gold Rush and tells the stories of the larger-than-life characters who lived the adventure. The Alaska Gold Rush at the end of the 19th century was the last great fit of gold fever in North America. Men and women, including African Americans, Portuguese, Japanese, Italians, and Chinese, all rushed north.

Alabama Fats is a real person. For more than half a century his job was to con people on the streets of America out of their money - and he was VERY good at it. Every line in this book is true. That was the way he wanted it. He wanted to make sure his children knew exactly what he had done all those years when he was 'on the road' and away from Cleveland. This book is an unrepentant look at the life of a con man. He is not sorry for a single person he conned. If his knees were better and Cleveland was warmer, he would be on the streets now, looking to take YOUR money.
