What can cause an ordinary citizen to become a serial killer? After the death of his wife, children, and grandchildren in a highway accident, which also killed the drivers who were at fault, Barry Wilk has nothing to live for —until he receives a mysterious summons to visit Lark Castle, his former sweetheart and the great love of his life. Lark is dying; it’s too late for them to have a second chance. Forty years ago, during his freshman year at college, their romance had been derailed — accidentally, he’d thought at the time.

In SWANSDOWN, the poet Donald Platt makes a study of life's inevitable transitions, from love's astonishing evolutions, to aging and its attendant losses. With the poem "Cloud Study" Platt brings his own mortality into view. Returning to a painting by Constable, he considers his own perspective, sitting by the Liffey, tending an injured knee. Young mothers, lovers, and runners pass, reminding the poet of who he once was and how quickly life, like weather, shifts.
