Thomas may be the first magical cougar to go freelance, but he still has a lot to learn about selecting clients. Guilty over the injuries suffered by his friend and client O’Meara, Thomas resolves to collect enough magical essence to get her healed. Teaming up with an under-appreciated cabal of technomagi, Thomas finds himself battling encroaching mages, vicious spirits, and the forces of the multiverse itself to gather the energy mysteriously popping up all over Grantsville.

When the dice are loaded, the claws come out. Rudy and Thomas have landed in Sin City, but not on all four paws. The Talking Animal Union is determined to trip up the Freelance Familiars and entangle Thomas in a game where Death holds all the cards. But Thomas can’t focus merely on saving himself. A vampire stalks the refugees of Grantsville, and to save his friends - and his own neck - Thomas has to put more than just himself on the line. The odds are raw and bloody in Vegas.

Thomas wanted a simple, stable existence, but saddled with unemployment, an absentee girlfriend, and the impending unpaid rent, change is hurtling down on him whether he likes it or not. Following the sudden murder of his strange elderly neighbor, he awakens on the wrong side of the Veil transformed into a mountain lion, and thrust into a dangerous world of magic.

I might be a werewolf. But I am a paramedic. It goes deeper than the adrenaline rush of the life or death calls. Every call no matter how minor, lets me end a shift with the knowledge that yes, I helped someone today. Except I cannot help anyone when people are shooting at me! Slade Hutchson, the rabble-rousing son of a bitch, is back in the city with a new job. The supernatural correspondent for a local TV station. A position he's using to poison the entire city against me.

Every moment is a struggle between the human and the beast. Wolf-me cares nothing for schedules, social niceties, or the importance of hiding. Territory is to be taken and protected. Pack is to be expanded. But I don’t want to give up being a paramedic to howl in the woods. I have to find a middle ground.

With magic leaking back into our world, working the nightshift as a paramedic comes with danger. But I handle it. I’ve got a shotgun for the zombies, and my lycanthropic rage hasn’t escaped my apartment. Life is normal-ish. All that changes when I’m called to help a dying fey knight and I make a promise. There’s a little girl with big eyes and a heart-rending sniffle. I can’t say no. Of course she’s not human. She’s their key to opening the long-closed gates and feasting on humanity.

There’s a new fey in town. She’s the Knight of Joy and I want to harsh all over her good vibes in the worst way. Sure, Portland could use a bit more happiness, but Joy’s flavor is the all-consuming kind that renders folks content to hand their souls to the fey. Not on my turf. The trouble is I can’t touch her. The Queen of Summer has threatened to shatter Secret’s mother and send me the pieces if I lay a single claw on her knight.
