This entertaining account, offering a plethora of little known facts and insights from previously classified military projects, shows how the real-world science of the Cold War followed in the footsteps of SF - and how the two together changed our perception of both science and scientists, and paved the way to the world we live in today.

I’m a cargo pilot. In the industry, I’m known as a “Freight Dog.” I fly canceled checks and other types of high-value cargo around the country, mostly at night, in airplanes that are older than I am. Flying freight - or “work” as we call it - in small, twin-engine aircraft is a lesser known side of the aviation world. Our day starts when banker’s hours end. Thousands of flights move millions of pounds of work from city to city every night while the rest of the country is asleep.

An underpaid, overworked certified flight instructor cheats death while attempting to teach a cast of incompetent student pilots to fly at a skeezy South Florida flight school; all in the quest to build flight time so he can get a “real job” at an airline. The planes break, the regs break, metal gets bent, students are lost at sea, and a Top Gun wannabe student, who has 400 hours of flight instruction, still hasn’t made his first solo flight.

Now you can waste not one, not two, but four perfectly good hours listening to Car Talk Classics, featuring some of Tom and Ray's favorite complete programs: everything from opening rant to bogus answers to eccentric closing credits. A radio road trip across America features some of the nuttiest callers ever to phone the show. Each week millions of radio listeners tune in to National Public Radio's Car Talk. A high point of every show is the call-in segment, when listeners phone in for advice and regale hosts Click and Clack with tales of their own automotive misadventures.

Car Talk, winner of a Peabody Award, is broadcast each week to NPR stations nationwide. The world's wackiest call-in show, it mixes automotive advice with wisecracks, roadside philosophy, and guffaws. No problem is too ridiculous, no solution too absurd, and before you know it, "you've wasted another perfectly good hour listening to Car Talk". Or, in this case, four.

The hands-down highlight of many a Car Talk episode, Daniel Pinkwater is responsible for some of the all-time greatest moments of the program's storied history on public radio. Whether discussing man's best friend (but worst passenger) or searching for the perfect vehicle for those who are "horizontally challenged", Pinkwater keeps Tom and Ray in stitches along with the show's far-flung audience.

The Hatchback of Notre Dame includes many memorable Car Talk classics, including Morley Safer of CBS' Sixty Minutes displaying a downright embarrassing obsession with his Peugeot and space shuttle astronaut John Grunsfeld, who calls from Hawaii. (Well, 700 miles over Hawaii, actually). And there's one of Click and Clack's all-time favorite callers - their pal, Dave from Bemidji - sharing the sordid tale of his journey to Alaska.

It leads Tom and Ray down a familiar path of wild speculation, occasionally brilliant suggestions, and lots of laughs. This is a must-have for anyone who loves animals, particularly the two that host Car Talk.

Moms have served honorably in the minivan wars, negotiated conflicting advice between husbands and fathers, and even extracted sticky sippy cups from under countless seats. Tom and Ray Magliozzi, aka Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers, answer calls about - and from - mothers, answering questions and giving advice on cars, families, and cutting the apron strings.

Car Talk: Why You Should Never Listen to Your Father When It Comes to Cars is a hilarious collection of the Tappet brothers' favorite calls over the years about fathers, fatherly advice, and fatherly negotiations around the use of cars and car care. Fathers may be wrong most of the time, but Tom and Ray show us why we love them anyway.

The Greatest Stories Ever Told gathers the tallest tales, the deepest digressions, and the most fabulous fabrications, revealing life for the Tappet Brothers, both in and out of the garage.
