Kipling himself was born and spent his very early life in India, and some of the inspiration for these stories comes from traditional tales he heard from his ayah and the family’s other servants.

Cherished by a Father, coveted by a king, loved by an almost-priest; tormented by demons, tortured by a madman, hunted by a cult, hounded by her father. Mouse has survived it all. Despite Mouse's power, her father always wanted a son - and now, at long last, he has him. And Mouse has a brother, someone else in the world just like her. Hiding among a tribe of the Martu in the isolation of the Australian outback near the edges of Lake Disappointment, Mouse and Angelo have seemingly evaded at least one of the predators hunting them.

Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling. Kipling's delightful collection of imaginative tales about natural history has captivated children and adults alike since its publication in 1902. Here stories are presented in dramatic format by members of The Online Stage. Stories include:"How the Whale Got His Throat", "How the Camel Got His Hump", "How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin", "How the Leopard Got His Spots", "The Elephant's Child", "The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo", and more.

Kipling began working on the book by telling the first three chapters as bedtime stories to his daughter Josephine. These had to be told "just so" (exactly in the words she was used to) or she would complain. The stories describe how one animal or another acquired its most distinctive features, such as how the leopard got his spots.

'In the high and far off times...' begins Rudyard Kipling’s 'How the Elephant Got His Trunk', and off we are taken by one of the most supreme storytellers into a world where children’s questions are turned neatly on their heads, and questions are provided which, far from stopping the stream of enquiries, only serve to make it gush faster.

These stories were meant to be told aloud, and the narrator David Lazarus is perfectly suited to tell these 12 tales Kipling originally told to his children over a century ago. The stories are not only entertaining, but many include a moral lesson, such as "How the Camel Got His Hump," a lesson about being lazy and procrastinating. If you have a cat, you will see him in "The Cat That Walked by Himself".

Just So Stories is a collection of stories written by Rudyard Kipling in 1902. He developed them during one of his many journeys to Africa. He told children wonderful accounts of how the animal kingdom's eccentricities came about. The collection of stories came to be known for their wordplay and insistence of placing the wisdom of children at the heart of his stories.

Four imaginative fables by one of the world's great storytellers propose whimsical explanations of how certain animals acquired their distinctive physical characteristics.

Why does the giraffe have spotty skin? Why do melons taste just so? An insatiably curious young elephant can't stop asking questions, until one in particular gets him into worse trouble than he could have ever imagined.
