Resultaat voor "Ethan Frome" in Fictie voor vrouwen

A sharp and enthralling new novel from the author of Search History about lies, privilege and a dangerous love triangle, set over the course of a summer in Athens. At a crossroads in their lives, a couple arrives in Greece to house-sit for a friend. Emma is searching for a meaningful next step...

She was the bright girl in the cherry-colored scarf. The laugh that warmed the kitchen. The object of a gaze so consuming it replaced the woman underneath. For over a century, readers have experienced Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome through a single lens — the frame narrator's reconstruction of a man's longing, a man's entrapment, a man's despair. Mattie Silver, the young woman at the center of the tragedy, exists only as the object of that gaze: the dark-haired girl at the dance, the bright thing in the dark house, the body on the sled. We never learn what Mattie was thinking.
