Ms. Warner could not help thinking of the burnt streaks that ran down the sides of the tiny carcass she had disposed of that day. The scalded paths that seemed to have seared through the fur and flesh of the poor animal. She had almost gagged at the unpalatable similarity between that vision and this highly detailed effigy. The story was fantastical. One that I knew would be embellished and exaggerated and probably be recycled with alternative names as a spook story to scare children for years to come.

Tyler Vance, widowed father of four-year-old Cullen, pulled his truck onto a bank parking lot in North Carolina. An armed robber exited the bank, pointed his gun at Vance, and ordered him out of the truck. Vance responded in the only way he knew how - as a trained killer, whose deadly precision kept him alive 20 years ago as a special operative.

In this rollicking, dark comedy about a failing hospital in Mars, Nebraska, Dr. Wave, a kind and well-meaning outsider, leaps into a year-long fight against an overwhelming bureaucracy upheld by a corrupt administrator who refuses to budge. Wave juggles some of the worst (and silliest) medical cases of his career and struggles to manage a hostile coterie of MDs with a host of defects, the least of which is their ubiquitous lack of Medical Board certifications, while doing his best to stay professional in the face of converging forces that seem hell-bent on undoing his easy solutions.

Five years after botching the Gabriel Wheeler abduction case, Detective Harvey Sam faces the second major case of his career. An asthmatic mother, Gillian, eats peanut butter before surgery - and dies on the operating table as planned. Her suicide ends an abusive affair and is meant to provide for her family through a malpractice settlement. Instead, Gillian’s husband, her teenage son, and a doctor with a multiple personality disorder must flee for their lives. They are pursued by the doctor’s husband, the psychopathic lover who drove Gillian to her death.
